WormNET 4.0 username PRE-registration

I was imagining what the rankings would be like when they got back up, since I had never experienced them, and I ran into a problem/difficulty that could arise.

Username registration.

With the database starting off fresh, everyone in the community will be needing to re-register their usernames to participate in the leagues. I see this as a major opportunity for people who enjoy being assholes, as they will attempt to register usernames of well-known and not-so-well-known community members, to satisfy their assholish cravings.

I thought of a couple solutions, and I'd like everybody's input and their suggestions as well.

1. Limit username registration to one username per IP per 24 hours. This could be something that would only be implemented for a week after the rankings started, to let everyone get the heads-up and register their names before they are stolen.

2. In event of a username theft, have a person's T17 forum identity be the deciding factor. A new board could be created for a week after the ranks are back up, to let people confirm their identity theft.

It's not a massively large problem, but it would be preferable to have your original username rather than having to change it, or attaching some nonsense numbers/characters and then having to say "Kheldar42 is the real me, honest! Not the guy with the username Kheldar."

I'd appreciate everyone's input, T17 staff in particular, as they are the only ones who can actually implement anything to halt username theft.

Great idea I hope t17 follow this through. I would hate to see specc opps take my name or anyone elses and just ruin that personas rep

It's a difficult problem faced by a lot of people, we'll see what we can do about it. The IP "registration" doesn't make sense since most are dynamic and allocated when people go online, very few people have "static" I.P. addresses that never change.

That's not what I was suggesting at all, Spadge. Although you're right, the 1 u/n per IP would be only a minor hindrance to those with dynamically allocated IPs, plus with proxy servers, etc.

I recently thought of another idea though, what about pre-registration through the T17 forums? The only people who need fear their usernames stolen and impostored are those who are semi-longterm members of the community, and with over 3700 people registered, I'd feel fairly confident in saying that anyone who would care about getting their name impostored would be registered here. So perhaps a week or so before opening the leagues you could have everyone who wanted to pre-register their T17 forum name for Wormnet post in a forum, or somesuch.
