The Bad News Thread

Have something you want to get off your chest ("My cat died"). Or maybe you heard some news that's been bumming you out ("Steven Spielberg is making a film about socks.")

Whatever the case, this is the thread for when you feel down in the dumps and want someone to know about it. Because, some days, you just feel like standing in front of the world and yelling "DAMN YOU WORLD! DAMN YOU ALL!"

Let it out, man. Let it all out.

I've been stuck in bed this whole week with a nasty respiratory infection and wanted to die.

But I'm all better now so... um... good news?

Could've been a lot worse. I actually booked a holiday for this week so I didn't lose much by not continuing the job for another week... except holiday pay. That would have helped a bit.

It took me 15 hours to get home from University; a journey that normally takes 5 hours.
My car will likely be scrapped and it cost £240 to get it and myself home. I arrived at 6am.

We suspect a fault with the timing chain caused the piston in one of the cylinders to collide with the valve, utterly destroying the valve. It's likely the chain simply skipped a tooth, rather than breaking, since the engine continued to run on the other three cylinders, simply misfiring on the damaged one, but it wouldn't start after I stopped it.

Oh, and the handbrake cable detached during the towing process.

I broke my tail bone after falling off of my bike, trying to do a wheelie.
The cracking sound was so loud, that at first I checked the mobile phone in my pocket.

That was two weeks ago, and I still can't sit for a minute without ache.
I sit on my leg in a crooked posture, until the leg goes numb.

Ouch! I bruised my tail bone when I was a kid, and it still juts out a bit. It's very apparent when you're feeling for it. Hurts, doesn't it?

If reading books keeps you sane then you were already on the precipice of insanity, anyway. Let it wash over you like the beating tide. Succumb to its will. Just don't involve guns and you'll be fine (if insane).

Look: for the PC version, they're getting rid of Singleplayer. To play on your own, your computer has to act as both a client and server. In a game that's already very CPU-intensive. Making the normally-rather-rubbish-without-texture-packs graphics suckier is not the worst that could happen.

They've updated the cobblestone texture and broken the lighting a bit. They're bizarely following the PC version's patches to the letter, bugs included.

Yes but in a couple of updates we'll have a propper modding API so we can install optifine super quickly.

I bought the PC version two months ago. I've yet to play it, because the game won't bloody load.

7 out of 10

Based on my experiences with setting up a server for the game, client/host setup on the same PC results in a significantly smoother gameplay experience for single player.

Given a lot of games already work like that behind the hood (eg. in Source games singleplayer is just a local server-client), that's not really a bad idea, it makes sure you have the same code across both modes and avoids nasty duplication/split issues (stuff in one mode not being up to par with the other etc).

But given Minecraft's history, I'm sure this will just mean the bugs will spread even faster and affect everyone, and you will actually have to manually set up server-client instead of the game doing it for you when you press a Singleplayer button like a rational human being would except.

The only drawback to this local server-client system for single player is, that the game doesn't pause when you press Escape, and monsters will eat you up.
At least with one of the recent betas where it had been activated.
When not connected with other clients, the local single player client should automatically pause the server.

An advantage is, that you will be able to play single player maps in LAN games.
