I think you're being slightly unfair on First Contact - yes, the actiony bits on the ship were crap, but the bits on the planet were good.

Star Trek (2009) was indeed great fun to watch once, but it really doesn't hold up well to more than one viewing - there are a significant number of plotholes, the villain is very poor, etc. - I'm hoping/thinking the new film possibly isn't like that, but I'll have to see it again to pass judgement fully.

EDIT: Yeah, I'm really looking forward to The World's End.

Looks alright. What was so urgent about the teaser trailer though?

This is probably the best dissection of the film I've seen: http://redlettermedia.com/plinkett/s.../star-trek-09/

The most interesting part is when he compares it the original Star wars films. Just as it's not important that Luke can apparently just fly his X-wing all the way to Dagobah, it's not important that Scotty can teleport kirk half way across the Galaxy. The character's actions and motivations trump technical details.

Nero wasn't the greatest villain and is a little too close to the baddie from Nemesis for my liking.
I thought the idea of their crappy (and inexplicably pointy) mining ship being an incredible military threat just because of their future technology was at least a little interesting.

Still, I should hope Benedict Cumberbatch does a better job in the new one!

I'm just a little bit hyped for it because it is a film directed by Edgar Wright and staring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. The last time that happened they made Hot Fuzz. The time before that they Made Shaun of the Dead. these are two of my favorite films ever.

I agree that minor technical details are unimportant, but I believe this isn't a minor issue - the whole star trek universe would be different if such things were "really" possible, and it would generally undermine a few things. That, however, is not my main gripe with the film. I'm talking about plotholes like, how does red matter destroy things half the time and send things back in time the other half? How did kirk manage to end up in the same cave as Nimoy; that's pretty damn lucky? Those are just two examples. The villain is incredibly weak as you said - little motivation and one dimensional. I do believe the same can be said for most characters - more caricatures. They do seem much more developed in this new film
