arrow Instant Messaging Programs - your choice!

Hello!

I have ICQ. Few days ago I registered in network of Windows Messenger, but my program can't work - it say, that something with .NET Messenger Service (but it's all right) or with connecting with Internet (but it's all right, too)...

What's happened? What I must do???

Yes, and it also uses MSN, AOL, Yahoo, Google and many more.
And it's very versatile with hundreds of user made plugins, needs a fraction of the ressources that ICQ needs.
Also, no annoying ads.

I can't get miranda IM to work, so I use trillian. Google it.

I used Trillian for a short period before I switched to Miranda, but I didn't like the interface because it was too different from ICQ in some aspects and I'm a lazy bum who can't be bothered to learn new stuff when I'm already used to something.

Even if MSN ain't that great, it's still better than any other IMP I've tried... Simple and works. (most of the time. )

How could MSN alone be better?
In Miranda I have contacts from ICQ, MSN, AOL, Yahoo, Jabber and Skype on one single contact list in one single, low ressource program that never has failed me.
It also auto-connects me to my favourite IRC channels.

The reason for me was, that its interface and controls handled almost like the ICQ client, which made it much easier to switch.
I tried Trillian for a few days, but there were a few often used things that handled very differently and couldn't be customized.
Also, I think Miranda has much more plugins and is more customizable.

But test both programs yourself, as I don't know how Trillian has developed the last year.

I'd say zero.

I love many of Trillian's features, but it seems very under-developed in some parts. Broken webcam support, transfer resuming and such. Can I upgrade from Trillian to Miranda, or would I lose all my contacts, history, etc?

That error probably has something to do with your firewall, try having MSN as an exception. Or contact your Internet connection provider, it might have something to do with that (though I doubt it).

Anyway, I'd rather use the regular Live Messenger right now. As tempting as Trillian seems, I don't think MSN would ever be the same without handwriting and bothering people with random game music and South Park quotes.

That is a very good question.
I only ever moved from ICQ-->Trillian and ICQ-->Miranda.

In those cases I the contacts are downloaded automatically from the ICQ server and I never cared about the histories.
I created my MSN, AOL and Yahoo accounts afterwards and never really used the respective original clients.

Xfire owns face. literally the only messenger I can use anymore considering the amount of video games I play almost constantly. nice, simple, easy to use, doesn't take up much ram, etc, etc, etc. awesome program.

from what i know windows messenger is dead... you have to use windows live messenger now.

so, 4 comes with windows.

it's safe to assume that

4 < 5

so 4 > 5
and >5 = windows messenger

then 4 = Windows Messenger!!

You don't need accounts for the other services to use Miranda with the MSN protocol.

I use it sometimes when trillian crashes and I can't be bothered to restart it
