Its not bad (the whole picture itself, not the worm) the lines are a little messed up, that's all, and the body shape isn't good.

But the background IS pretty nice.

With thinner and clearer lines for the worm this would be very good. The worm's shape is nice and I also love the background

I agree with thurbo.
The background is good, the worm shape is good, you just need to neaten up the lines... and get rid of the grass, the brush is terrible.

and it works relatively well except that it looks like the bottom of that worm is boiling. way too red.

and NEVER use a simple linear gradient like you did on the health bubble. that looks terrible.

here's a hint: skin tone doesn't magically turn red for no reason half way across someone's body. there has to be a reason. like absurd amounts of heat. or genital disease. your image is exactly why every digital artist who's ever gotten hold of a copy of photoshop suggests that no one ever use the gradient tool.

here's another hint: covering the outer sections of a bad part of your picture doesn't make the picture less bad. it makes the fact that you're too lazy to actually solve the problem just that much more obvious. the problem isn't that the health bar looks bad because it's flat. it looks bad because gradients look terrible 90% of the time. don't use them. ever. seriously.

That's... just missing the point.

Look, just don't use simple gradients. Ever. Unless you know specifically what you're doing, in the best case it'll look like a poor man's shading, and in the worst case it just looks completely rubbish. The only place they're applicable at all are in generic background and Powerpoint presentations.

And when your picture looks like a Powerpoint presentation...

Agreed. You're shading like you just know "oh one side is light and another is dark". That's not how it works.

You've got a flat image. You wanna give it some shading to make it look more dimensional and realistic. So you imagine you place a light source (eg. the sun, an explosion, etc.) on some point (you don't need to actually draw it, just imagine it). Now all the sides that the sun touches directly become lighter. All the sides that it doesn't (usually on the opposite side of the light) become darker. This can also create shadows and what not. Example:

#1 - Flat image.
#2 - Shaded image with light source on the left.
#3 - Shaded image with light source on the right.

On your picture the light and dark sides are just mixed all over the place which makes no visual sense.

You also gotta make sure the shades are soft and not very different from the original color (unlike my example which is just horrible MSPaint default colors

).
